Nonfiction Reading Practice
For elementary schoolers entering 3rd - 5th grades this fall, or younger students who is good at reading and writing.
Class starts as soon as we have 6 students together
Saturdays 6pm-7pm
Introduce students to different forms of poetry (such as Haiku, free verse, sonnet and acrostic) and help them understand the unique characteristics of each form.
Teach students how to use literary devices (such as imagery, metaphor, line breaks and personification) to enhance their poems and convey meaning.
Encourage students to experiment with different writing techniques (such as brainstorming, freewriting, and revision) to develop their poems.
Help students understand how to structure a poem (such as line breaks, stanzas, and rhyme) to create rhythm and enhance meaning.
Foster a love of poetry by exposing students to a wide range of poets and poetry styles.
Provide opportunities for students to share their poems with others and receive feedback in a positive and constructive manner.
Help students to put together a small sample of poems to submit to contests and publishing.
Each class will be 6-8 students with two 1-hour classes each week. Teacher Ms. Tania is from Mexico with both English and Spanish teaching experience of 8 years.
